MINUTES OF THE FOUNDING MEETING FOR THE
"KARACHI UNIVERSITY GEOLOGY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION (KUGAA)"
HELD AT BHI OFFICE ISLAMABAD ON JULY 10. 1998.

A meeting was held on July 10, 1998 in Islamabad. The objective of the meeting was to form an association of old students of Department of Geology, University of Karachi. The meeting was attended by the old students from the Department invited by Mr. Masood Abdali and Mr. Syed Tariq Hasany.

The participants were: 

Mr. Masood Abdali (BHI) recited the Holy Quran. Mr. Tariq Hasany proposed Mr. S.M.S. Zaidi(late) (Ex-Professor Department of Geology) to chair the meeting which was seconded by participants; hence Mr. Zaidi (late) chaired the meeting.

The introduction was given by Mr. M. Abdali & Mr. S.T. Hasany.

Mr. Abdali said that hundreds of students of Karachi University Geology Department had been passed out since 1958 and they had played extraordinary role serving the country but they should not be forgotten the institute that made them able to do so. He said it would be an appropriate time to help out our institution as it was the duty of the old students.

Mr. Tariq Hasany said that old students of almost all educational institutions felt pride naming themselves that showed the sense of affiliation with their school. Geological industry was widespread in the country and overseas and took active part to promote the economics of that country. Vast geoscientific experience of students would be shared among the professionals and should also benefit to the rookies. Establishment of Alumni would provide a scientific and social platform and that organization could take part in the Department of. Geology or his nominee. Therefore, it was decided to obtain the present Chairman's consent. However, Mr. Hassan Gohar was selected Senior Vice President of the Alumni. Mr. Tariq Hasany proposed the name of Mr. Atif. R. Khan for the Secretary General which was seconded by Masood Abdali and Arif Kamal. Mr. Sarfraz Siddiqi proposed Mr. Mohammad Athar for Finance Secretary which was seconded by Sibghatullah Siddiqi. Mr. Arif Kamal proposed Mr. S. Tariq Hasany for information Secretary which was seconded by Syedain Zaidi (late) and Masood Abdali. For the four members of the Executive Committee Miss. Farida Habib, Mr. Masood Abdali, Mr. Sarfraz Siddiqui and Mr. Mohammad Saleem were proposed by Mr. Arif Kamal, Mr. Syedain Zaidi(late), Mr. Sibghatullah Siddiqui and Mr. Mohammed Athar respectively. 

LIST OF THE AD-HOC OFFICE BEARERS OF THE ALUMNI EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

MEMBERS 

Mr. Arif Kamal asked the information Secretary to prepare a draft of membership form as well as Monogram. 

It was also approved by the members that the secretariat for the association shall be the office of BHI and Miss. Shazia Fareed (Baker Hughes Inteq) would be the Honorary Office Secretary. 

Mr. S.U. Siddiqui also suggested that an E-mail facility should be used and a separate connection by the name KUGAA may be established. 

Mr. S.U. Siddiqui & M. Abdali suggested that the Ad-hoc Committee should work either for one year or whenever the number of members reaches up to 100, an election should be held. The proposal was approved. 

Mr. Arif Kamal also emphasized on the issue of news letter. Mr. S. Tariq Hasany presented Section-7 of the Constitution which describe the duties and responsibilities of the Information development of Geology. Mr. Hasany informed that the meeting was called on very short notice and maximum persons were informed by telephones, however letters were sent to the Chairman & professors of Geology department. Mr. Hasany suggested the name Karachi University Department of Geology Alumni Association abbreviated KUGAA. 

Mr. Arif Kamal and Atif Khan on behalf of all the participants had appreciated the efforts of Mr. Masood Abdali and Mr. Tariq Hasany for work done by them for the establishment of the Alumni and agreed that to form such an organization was a timely resolution. 

The copies of agenda and a draft of proposed constitution was distributed among the attendants. It was decided unanimously that constitution was to be taken up as it was presented with minor modifications that was made by Mr. Arif Kamal, Atif R. Khan and S.U. Siddiqui, until the time elected Executive Committee takes over the Alumni. 

Mr. Arif Kamal & S.U. Siddiqui suggested that the status of the Chairman of the department of Geology should be the active in the affairs of Alumni. It was decided that either the Chairman or his nominee would be the Vice President. It was felt strongly that Chairman's participation in Alumni could be phenomenal to make effective communication with the members of Alumni and geoscientific industry. Mr. Arif Kamal suggested that young people should be given ample opportunities while selecting Executive committee. 

Mr. Atif Khan suggested that a meeting should be arranged in Department of Geology in University of Karachi which was accepted to hold such a meetin6 till the appropriate time. 

Mr. Arif Kamal suggested the name of Dr. S.I. Mohsin as the Vice President. Moreover he proposed that attendants should be the FOUNDER MEMBERS. It was accepted and adopted. 

Mr. Atif Khan suggested that the list of the office bearers should be shortened. This suggestion was approved by the members and required amendments were made.

RESOLUTION 

The meeting discussed the agenda items one by one. 

In order to form the Alumni Mr. T. Hasany requested Mr. Arif Kamal to read out a formal resolution that should declare the Alumni establish.
